Project introduction

The project to build a DNA Barcode database of marine organisms in Vietnam aims to collect, standardize and publish data on specimens, genetic sequences and related metadata for the groups: Sponges (Porifera), Echinodermata and Mollusca. The system supports species identification, biodiversity research, conservation and applications in medicine, food and environment.

Objectives: (1) Standardize data structures according to reference standards; (2) Provide user-friendly search – filter – download tools; (3) Expand integration with international databases (GenBank/BOLD) in the next stages.

Scientific value & Application

  • Fast & accurate identification: Support species identification based on DNA markers (e.g., COI 5P).
  • Knowledge standardization: Store sequences, sample metadata, and classification information according to a standard framework.
  • Serve research & conservation: Monitoring distribution, population dynamics, detecting invasive species.
  • Interdisciplinary applications: Marine medicinal herbs, food safety, environmental monitoring, science education.

Methods & Technical Standards

General flowchart: Sample collection → Storage → DNA extraction → Barcoding → Sequencing → Quality control → Standardization & publication.
  • Sample collection & storage: comply with biosafety and sample records.
  • DNA extraction / barcode: according to validated SOP.
  • Sequencing & QC: coverage control, noise removal, trace retention.
  • Data standardization & Reference standards: nomenclature, coordinates, metadata, technical standards.

List of applicable standards (summary): sampling procedures, extraction/sequencing SOPs, naming rules and metadata standards compatible with international reference repositories.
