Project introduction
The project to build a DNA Barcode database of marine organisms in Vietnam aims to collect, standardize and publish data on specimens, genetic sequences and related metadata for the groups: Sponges (Porifera), Echinodermata and Mollusca. The system supports species identification, biodiversity research, conservation and applications in medicine, food and environment.
Objectives: (1) Standardize data structures according to reference standards; (2) Provide user-friendly search – filter – download tools; (3) Expand integration with international databases (GenBank/BOLD) in the next stages.
Scientific value & Application
- Fast & accurate identification: Support species identification based on DNA markers (e.g., COI 5P).
- Knowledge standardization: Store sequences, sample metadata, and classification information according to a standard framework.
- Serve research & conservation: Monitoring distribution, population dynamics, detecting invasive species.
- Interdisciplinary applications: Marine medicinal herbs, food safety, environmental monitoring, science education.
